Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy

I am a fully qualified, British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Accredited Counsellor and UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) Registered Psychotherapist, based in Bloomsbury, Central London, WC1. I offer both short and long term counselling and psychotherapy to individuals, using an open, grounded, jargon-free approach. I am experienced at working with a wide range of issues including depression, anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, addiction, sexuality, relationship difficulties, bereavement, loss and identity. As well as my own private counselling and psychotherapy practice, I have worked extensively as a Counsellor and Psychotherapist in a variety of settings, including the NHS, Social Services and for a number of not-for-profit organisations.

What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy

My role as counsellor or therapist is not to judge, advise, assume or diagnose. Instead, I aid an open exploration of whatever aspect (or aspects) of your life you may wish to understand, make sense of, or change. I work on the assumption that feeling safe and contained within the client-counsellor relationship, forms the basis of our work together. My approach to counselling and therapy is non-dogmatic, supportive and involved. It is also always jargon-free – if things cannot be stated in every day language, then it is likely that they have not been properly expressed or understood.

Primarily, the first session is used to explore the possibility of our working together. It is a chance for you to ask me any questions about how I work and what counselling entails. We can discuss what your expectations of counselling or therapy might be, and any anxieties you might have about beginning. We will also go over practicalities such as fees and timing of sessions.

If, after this first session, you feel that you would like to begin working with me, then our work together can carry on for as long as you desire it to. You may find that a few sessions are all that you need, or you may wish to continue much beyond this.

You are always free to talk openly about how you are finding counselling – indeed, this can form a very useful part of our work together.

Clinical Qualifications in Counselling and Psychotherapy

My professionally accredited four-year training has principally been with the New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling, in London, where I gained an MA in Existential Counselling and Psychotherapy. Before training as a counsellor and psychotherapist, I gained a BA (Hons) in Philosophy at Leeds University.

I adhere to the Codes of Ethics and Practice of the BACP and UKCP. My work is professionally and regularly supervised by a BACP and UKCP registered supervisor.

Additional Information

Counselling and psychotherapy are both ‘talking therapies', or in other words, conversations that attempt to help us make sense of our lives. Their aim is to clarify those aspects of a person's life that cause distress, confusion or lead us to feel blocked, stuck or unfulfilled. It is through such clarification that one is more able to make choices about those things that we may wish to change or understand more fully, and also to come to terms with those things that we can't.
