Clinical Experience in Psychotherapy

I am a UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) Registered Psychotherapist. I offer face to face counselling and psychotherapy to individuals who are experiencing difficulties in their lives; in relationships, at work, with choices, and with life events. I help individuals to explore past history and understand its impact on the present, whilst enabling clients to integrate this understanding and make new and healthy choices for their lives. I have 20 years' experience working in Primary Care, the voluntary sector, Employee Assistance Programmes and in Private Practice. I am also a counselling trainer and teach on a Counselling Degree Programme. I work from home outside Ipswich and offer a safe, containing and respectful space in which to explore personal issues and difficulties.

What to Expect during Psychotherapy

As an Integrative Psychotherapist I believe that the most important factor in our growth, development and ability to choose and change is the relationships we have with others, with ideas and with our environment.

I will work with what you bring, with the understanding that we will not examine the problem/issue in isolation but as a part of your world, seeing it in the wider context of your life and history. There is much written about the way that therapy is conducted and how it works and maybe not what you want to read about right at this moment if you are needing to find a therapist quickly.

However, you may want to know some basics. Practically, what happens is that I will see you for an assessment, take a history and explore your world and your difficulties, and how you arrived at this point. You will want to consider whether you are happy to work with me, ask me questions and explore concerns about the process. If we decide to work together we can then make arrangements to do so.

In the process we will talk about your family of origin, your early experiences at home and at school, as these will help us to arrive at an understanding of your current issues. Of course, there is much more to therapy than this and in my Integrative way of working I think it is important to acknowledge and grapple with some of the issues which affect all people, such as what meaning we give to what we do, what stops us achieving our goals and dreams, why we aren't as good at being parents, spouses, co-workers etc as we would like to be. There are many facets of a person's life and all can be considered in therapy.

I also work cognitively on issues such as phobias, anxiety and depression which can sometimes be treated with brief interventions. This can be decided at the assessment.

I offer you a warm and non-judgemental space to grow.
