Clinical Experience in Counselling, Psychology and Psychotherapy
I am an integratively trained British Psychological Society (BPS) Chartered Counselling Psychologist and Psychotherapist. I have experience of working with a wide variety of presentations in private practice and in two short term primary care settings with a focus on substance use addictions.
With a minimum of 1000 hours face to face clinical experience, I have worked mostly with a cognitive behavioural solution focused problem solving psychotherapeutic approach to work that aims to accurately assess the psychological and psychotherapeutic needs of individuals and couples, and develop a treatment plan to benefit the style of life and living of the person or people concerned.
In a non judgemental flexible yet structured atmosphere I aim to facilitate a mutually reciprocal counselling and psychotherapeutic environment, where we can work together to adapt counselling and psychotherapeutic techniques and skills to your psychological needs. By continually assessing the progress made and adjusting your treatment plan as necessary to meet the demands of everyday life, I hope to work to help raise awareness into how well-tried out patterns and shapes of behaviour from the past present themselves in everyday life, and how through a process of developing new problem solving skills and coping strategies it is possible to increase our potential to adapt more freely to new sometimes unexpected situations, circumstances and events, thereby increasing personal effectiveness and competence to confront and master some of life's challenges in a more beneficial way.
As the counselling relationship develops longer term therapist and client become more able to access deeper perhaps more meaningful psychological structures that might be unconsciously acting in an antagonistic manner to current intentions. At this level of counselling and psychotherapy, counselling psychology applies the value of the developing psychotherapeutic relationship to identify the purpose of underlying thoughts, feelings and attitudes from the past in the present.
What to Expect during Counselling, Psychology and Psychotherapy
I am trained in the existential phenomenological tradition. This means that whilst I do work with interpretative interventions and sharing with clients my understanding of presenting issues to help clients make sense of their world, I do hope to help clients make disciplined and structured choices and decisions based on one's own experience of life and living that encourages a high degree of autonomy and independence. This develops from the value of increased self awareness and a clearer perceptual view of things and people to the powers of judgement and reasoning. So whilst I come from my training in the humanistic / existential tradition and an experiential background that aims to help my clients articulate the purpose and meaning of mood and emotions and how to manage them, as a psychologist I am also trained in the value of cognition and behaviour to organise how we interact, act and react to our experiences. Putting this together I might say then that I aim to adapt counselling and psychotherapeutic skills and techniques to help clients experience the place of mood and emotion in their behaviour and to make self-responsible choices and decisions about what their intentions might be for how to change it.
In this way I feel as a psychologist I am able to share with individuals and couples why things and people might appear to be like they are as people who share in measurable and evidence-based similarities, yet I am also able to offer individuals and couples a treatment plan tailored to their own unique needs that aims to keep pace with the ebb and flow of shifting thoughts, feelings, attitudes and ideas that are unique to each individual as they appear in a counselling process that emphasises the qualitative and idiosyncratic differences that counselling and psychotherapy offer.
Psychotherapeutically, as a humanist I am naturally orientated towards sensitive and compassionate practice. Person centred with a deep belief in helping people explore and create new opportunities for action enriched with new skills, I hope to enable a vision of a future from a present that has endeavoured to clear some of the brambles that have overgrown a path to a more harmonious and cohesive life-work balance.
At the initial session, having shared what has brought you into counselling and psychotherapy at this time, we will have an opportunity to discuss the confidential nature of our work together and develop a treatment plan to meet your needs.
