4+ Years Post-Registration Experience

Hi. I'm Maria Scholes. I'm a registered counsellor and psychotherapist - I help individuals with their mental wellbeing. I hold private and public sector experience as a counsellor and psychotherapist. My focus involves alcohol dependence, Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and self esteem, and the particular challenges experienced by women.

What to Expect

An initial assessment session helps you to see if you feel comfortable with me, discuss what concerns you, ask questions, clarify confidentiality, and decide if therapy could benefit you. Please use a contact option on the right to arrange an initial assessment session in Bournemouth or Christchurch.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioural therapy concentrates on how your thoughts (cognitions) influence your emotions and actions. It recognises and challenges negative thoughts that perpetuate the issues you encounter. The objective of CBT is for you to experience healthier thoughts and emotions.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) recommends CBT for alcohol dependence, Binge Eating Disorder (BED), bipolar disorder, depression, Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), panic disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and social anxiety disorder.

Counselling centres on listening to you, and supporting you. You decide what matter concerning your childhood or adult life you explore. The aim of counselling is to enable you to talk about a difficulty and find a way forward which is appropriate for you.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) recommends counselling for depression.

Psychotherapy focuses on you, and you gaining insight into the difficulties you face. It explores your thoughts, emotions and relevant events in your history. Psychotherapy aims to help you change or find appropriate ways of coping.
