9+ Years Post-Chartership Experience

Hello. I am Kyriaki Iordanidou. I'm a chartered and registered counselling psychologist - I help individuals and couples with their psychological health. I have private sector experience as a counselling psychologist. My interest includes self esteem, as well as the particular issues encountered by heterosexual women.

What to Expect

An initial assessment session allows you to see if you feel comfortable with me, share what worries you, ask questions, clarify confidentiality, and determine if therapy may assist you. Counselling

Counselling centres on listening to you, and supporting you. You determine which matter regarding your early years and/or adult life you explore. The aim of counselling is to enable you to talk about a problem and find a way forward which is right for you.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) recommends counselling for depression.

Psychology

Psychology is interested in you and your mind, emotions and behaviour. It offers you psychological interventions and mental wellbeing support. The intention of psychological therapies is to help you alleviate symptoms.

Thoughts on Mental Health

My opinion is to keep it simple, show an interest, and be willing to listen rather than talk. People don't want to be lectured, they simply want to be heard. You could simply say: 'I am concerned about you, would you like to talk?' or 'I am here if you need to talk.' Remember that the person in trouble might feel hesitant about approaching you; by making the first move, with an open question, you allow them to take the opportunity and talk to you. Listen without being judgemental and opinionated. Expressing your opinion, while being empathic and showing a real effort to understand, is very important.

Go for a walk or out for a coffee during the daytime, especially if it is a sunny day. 30 minutes of daily exercise is enough to help your body produce serotonin and endorphins, which act as brain mood stabilisers. Spend time with family and friends with whom you know you will have a good time; eat well, including foods high in omega 3 fats, which help with mood; and reduce stress levels by doing fun activities.
