Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT concentrates on how your thoughts influence your feelings and behaviour. It identifies and addresses negative ideas which perpetuate the problems you encounter. The aim of cognitive behavioural therapy is for you to experience healthier thoughts and feelings.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) indicates cognitive behavioural therapy for alcohol dependence, bipolar disorder, Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), depression, Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), panic disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), schizophrenia, self harm and social anxiety disorder.

Counselling centres on listening to you, and assisting you. You decide which issue concerning your childhood or adult life you discuss. The aim of counselling is to help you to talk about a difficulty and find a solution which is right for you.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) recommends counselling for depression.
