Welcome. I am Hilary Dawson. I'm a senior accredited and registered counsellor and psychotherapist - I assist individuals with their emotional wellbeing. What to Expect

An introductory assessment session allows you to see if you are comfortable with me, share what worries you, ask questions, clarify confidentiality, and determine if therapy may help you. Please use a contact option on the right to book a preliminary assessment session in Portchester, Fareham.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioural therapy concentrates on how your thoughts (cognitions) affect your emotions and actions. It identifies and addresses negative ideas which perpetuate the problems you experience. The objective of CBT is for you to experience healthier thoughts and feelings.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) indicates CBT for alcohol dependence, anorexia nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder (BED), bipolar disorder, bulimia nervosa, depression, Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), panic disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), self harm and social anxiety disorder.

Counselling centres on listening to you, and assisting you. You determine what issue concerning your early years and/or adulthood you explore. The objective of counselling is to enable you to talk about a problem and discover a way forward which is appropriate for you.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) recommends counselling for depression.

Psychoanalytic Therapy

Psychoanalytic therapy focuses on the unconscious meaning of the issues you experience. It facilitates your consciousness of some of your unconscious. The aim of psychoanalytic therapy is for you to gain personal knowledge and use it if you wish to.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic therapy centres on the unconscious causes of the issues you encounter. It facilitates you in being aware of parts of your internal dynamics. Psychodynamic therapy seeks to increase your self-understanding to give you options.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) indicates psychodynamic therapy for anorexia nervosa, depression, self harm and social anxiety disorder.

Psychotherapy focuses on you, and you gaining insight into the difficulties you confront. It considers your ideas, emotions and relevant moments in your life. Psychotherapy aims to help you develop or discover suitable ways of coping.
