12+ Years Post-Chartership Experience

Hello. I am Maria. I'm a chartered and registered counselling psychologist - I support individuals and couples with their psychological wellbeing. I have private sector experience as a counselling psychologist. My interest includes abuse, anger and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), as well as the particular challenges experienced by men and women.

What to Expect

An introductory assessment session helps you to see if you are comfortable with me, share what troubles you, ask questions, clarify confidentiality, and assess if therapy could help you. Please use a contact option on the right to arrange a preliminary assessment appointment in Westbury on Trym, Bristol.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT focuses on how your thoughts influence your emotions and actions. It identifies and challenges unhelpful thoughts which perpetuate the problems you encounter. The aim of CBT is for you to have healthier thoughts and feelings.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) indicates cognitive behavioural therapy for anorexia nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder (BED), bipolar disorder, bulimia nervosa, depression, Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), schizophrenia, self harm and social anxiety disorder.

Counselling

Counselling centres on listening to you, and assisting you. You decide what matter regarding your childhood or adulthood you discuss. An aim of counselling is to help you to speak about a problem and discover a way forward which is appropriate for you.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) recommends counselling for depression.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical behaviour therapy evaluates your perception of your thoughts and feelings. It encourages your discovery of helpful reactions to your life. Dialectical behaviour therapy hopes to help you improve and continue your coping skills.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) recommends dialectical behaviour therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).

Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR directs your eye motions to stimulate how your mind processes information. The procedure endeavours to reprocess your locked distressing memories. The aim of eye movement desensitisation reprocessing is to desensitise your painful memories.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) indicates EMDR for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Humanistic Therapy

Humanistic therapy focuses on appreciating you. It considers you as a whole person and emphasises your personal development. Humanistic therapy seeks to help you recognise your autonomy.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic therapy centres on the unconscious causes of the problems you encounter. It facilitates you in becoming aware of aspects of your inner dynamics. Psychodynamic therapy aims to enhance your self-understanding to give you choices.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) recommends psychodynamic therapy for anorexia nervosa, depression, self harm and social anxiety disorder.

Psychology

Psychology is interested in you and your thoughts, feelings and actions. It offers you psychological interventions and mental health support. An objective of psychological therapy is to help you ease symptoms.

Solution Focused Therapy (SFT)

Solution focused therapy focuses on finding answers for the issues you experience. It examines what helps you, and what steps you can make to effect change. The intention of solution focused therapy is to help you recognise and use your personal resources.
