Hello. I'm Barry Carruthers. I'm a registered counsellor and psychotherapist - I help individuals and couples with their mental wellbeing. I have private sector experience as a counsellor and psychotherapist. My focus involves Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and the particular problems encountered by men.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioural therapy concentrates on how your thoughts (cognitions) influence your emotions and behaviour. It recognises and challenges unhelpful thoughts that perpetuate the issues you encounter. The objective of cognitive behavioural therapy is for you to have healthier thoughts and feelings.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) suggests cognitive behavioural therapy for bipolar disorder, depression, Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), panic disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), self harm and social anxiety disorder.

Eye movement desensitisation reprocessing guides your eye movements to stimulate how your brain processes data. The technique attempts to reprocess your locked distressing memories. The objective of eye movement desensitisation reprocessing is to desensitise your painful memories.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) recommends EMDR for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
