Counselling centres on listening to you, and assisting you. You decide what matter concerning your childhood or adult life you discuss. The objective of counselling is to enable you to speak about a problem and find a way forward which is right for you.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) recommends counselling for depression.

Psychotherapy focuses on you, and you obtaining insight into the problems you face. It explores your ideas, emotions and significant events in your life. Psychotherapy intends to help you develop or discover suitable methods of coping.
