10+ Years Post-Accreditation Experience

Hi. I'm Katherine Hegarty. I'm an accredited and registered counsellor and psychotherapist - I assist individuals with their psychological wellbeing. I hold private sector experience as a counsellor and psychotherapist. My interest includes abuse, depression and relationship problems, as well as the specific problems encountered by men, transgender people and women.

What to Expect

A preliminary assessment session helps you to discover if you are comfortable with me, discuss what troubles you, ask questions, understand confidentiality, and decide if therapy could assist you. Please use a contact option on the right to arrange an introductory assessment appointment in Kemp Town, Brighton.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioural therapy focuses on how your thoughts (cognitions) affect your emotions and behaviour. It identifies and addresses negative ideas which perpetuate the issues you experience. The aim of CBT is for you to experience healthier thoughts and feelings.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) indicates cognitive behavioural therapy for alcohol dependence, anorexia nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder (BED), bulimia nervosa, depression, Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), panic disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), self harm and social anxiety disorder.

Counselling centres on listening to you, and assisting you. You determine what issue concerning your early years and/or adult life you discuss. The aim of counselling is to help you to talk about a problem and discover a solution that is appropriate for you.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) recommends counselling for depression.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic therapy centres on the unconscious meaning of the problems you encounter. It facilitates you in being conscious of aspects of your internal dynamics. Psychodynamic therapy seeks to increase your self-understanding to give you choices.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) suggests psychodynamic therapy for anorexia nervosa, depression, self harm and social anxiety disorder.

Psychotherapy focuses on you, and you obtaining insight into the difficulties you face. It considers your thoughts, emotions and relevant moments in your history. Psychotherapy intends to help you change or find appropriate ways of coping.
