More Detail

Over 20 Years Post-Registration Experience

Welcome. I am Garath Powell. I'm a senior accredited and registered counsellor and psychotherapist - I assist individuals with their mental health. I have private sector experience as a counsellor and psychotherapist. My interest involves Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and the specific challenges encountered by men.

What to Expect

An initial assessment appointment allows you to see if you feel comfortable with me, share what troubles you, ask questions, clarify confidentiality, and determine if therapy may assist you. Please use a contact option on the right to book an introductory assessment appointment in Loughborough.

Client Centred Therapy

Client centred therapy concentrates on understanding and supporting you. It encourages your openness about the worries you experience. Client centred therapy seeks to help you discover your own answers.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT concentrates on how your thoughts (cognitions) affect your feelings and behaviour. It identifies and challenges unhelpful ideas that perpetuate the problems you encounter. The aim of CBT is for you to have healthier thoughts and emotions.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) recommends cognitive behavioural therapy for alcohol dependence, depression, Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), panic disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), social anxiety disorder and substance dependence.

Counselling centres on listening to you, and assisting you. You decide which matter concerning your early years or adulthood you discuss. An aim of counselling is to help you to talk about a difficulty and find a way forward which is right for you.

Psychotherapy focuses on you, and you gaining insight into the problems you face. It explores your thoughts, emotions and significant events in your life. Psychotherapy aims to help you develop or discover appropriate methods of coping.
