More Detail

Over 16 Years Post-Chartership Experience

Hello. I'm David Purves. I'm a chartered and registered counselling psychologist and an accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) psychotherapist - I assist individuals and couples with their psychological wellbeing. I have private and public sector experience as a counselling psychologist and a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) psychotherapist. My interest includes Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and the particular obstacles faced by men.

What to Expect

An introductory assessment meeting helps you to see if you are comfortable with me, share what worries you, ask questions, clarify confidentiality, and assess if therapy could assist you. Please use a contact option on the right to book an initial assessment meeting in Reading.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT concentrates on how your thoughts influence your feelings and actions. It identifies and addresses unhelpful ideas which maintain the issues you encounter. The objective of cognitive behavioural therapy is for you to experience healthier thoughts and emotions.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) indicates cognitive behavioural therapy for anorexia nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder (BED), bipolar disorder, Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), bulimia nervosa, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) (ME), depression, Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), panic disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and schizophrenia.

Counselling

Counselling centres on listening to you, and assisting you. You decide what matter concerning your childhood and/or adulthood you explore. The objective of counselling is to help you to talk about a problem and discover a way forward which is right for you.

Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR guides your eye motions to stimulate how your brain processes data. The procedure attempts to reprocess your frozen distressing memories. The aim of eye movement desensitisation reprocessing is to desensitise your painful memories.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) suggests eye movement desensitisation reprocessing for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Integrative Therapy

Integrative therapy combines therapies to fit your preferences and the problems you encounter. It considers your subjective experiences and choices. The aim of integrative therapy is to help you advance your self-understanding.

Psychology

Psychology is interested in you and your thoughts, feelings and actions. It offers you psychological treatments and mental wellbeing support. An objective of psychological therapy is to help you ease symptoms.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy focuses on you, and you gaining insight into the difficulties you face. It explores your ideas, emotions and significant events in your history. Psychotherapy intends to help you change or discover appropriate methods of managing.
