More Detail

2+ Years Post-Registration Experience

Hello. I'm Barry Carruthers. I'm a registered counsellor and psychotherapist - I help individuals and couples with their mental wellbeing. I have private sector experience as a counsellor and psychotherapist. My focus involves Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and the particular problems encountered by women.

What to Expect

An initial assessment session helps you to discover if you feel comfortable with me, share what troubles you, ask questions, understand confidentiality, and assess if therapy could help you. Please use a contact option on the right to arrange an introductory assessment session in Ellesmere Port or Bromborough, Wirral.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioural therapy concentrates on how your thoughts (cognitions) influence your emotions and behaviour. It recognises and challenges unhelpful thoughts that perpetuate the issues you encounter. The objective of cognitive behavioural therapy is for you to have healthier thoughts and feelings.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) recommends CBT for bipolar disorder, depression, Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), panic disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), self harm and social anxiety disorder.

Counselling

Counselling centres on listening to you, and assisting you. You determine what issue concerning your early years or adult life you discuss. The objective of counselling is to help you to talk about a problem and find a way forward which is appropriate for you.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) recommends counselling for depression.

Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye movement desensitisation reprocessing guides your eye movements to stimulate how your brain processes data. The technique attempts to reprocess your locked distressing memories. The objective of eye movement desensitisation reprocessing is to desensitise your painful memories.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (England and Wales) indicates eye movement desensitisation reprocessing for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Psychology

Psychology is interested in you and your mind, emotions and behaviour. It offers you psychological treatments and mental health support. An objective of psychological therapies is to help you alleviate symptoms.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy focuses on you, and you obtaining insight into the problems you confront. It considers your ideas, emotions and significant events in your life. Psychotherapy aims to help you develop or find appropriate ways of coping.
