What to Expect

An initial assessment appointment allows you to see if you feel comfortable with me, discuss what worries you, ask questions, understand confidentiality, and assess if therapy may assist you. Please use a contact option on the right to book a preliminary assessment appointment in Highgate, London.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy focuses on you, and you gaining insight into the problems you confront. It considers your thoughts, feelings and relevant moments in your life. Psychotherapy intends to help you change or discover suitable methods of coping.

Thoughts on Mental Health

From a psychoanalytic perspective, it is an attempt to fill an inner emptiness. It's mainly women who will 'use' shopping in this way, partly because shopping is seen as 'women's work' - i.e. a natural role for women to undertake. Buying clothes, jewellery or cosmetics is an attempt to present yourself to the world as more attractive, as more worthy of respect and recognition. It is a plea for love, often from a woman with a fragile sense of self. Men, too, buy excessively but a much smaller proportion and they tend to buy 'things' - gadgets, CDs, DVDs, computers and everything electronic. When the shopping becomes a preoccupation, the idea of using shopping as a 'solution' becomes the problem. One woman told me: 'Even as I handed over the credit card, I knew the magic couldn't work'.
