Divorce
Divorce is the legal dissolution of a marriage. Divorce involves cutting off, separating or disuniting from one's other. The
breakdown of a marriage, civil partnership or relationship can be a
painful and difficult experience for a couple, as well as for other family
members. Attending to the important personal, practical,
legal and financial matters associated with divorce can be very stressful. In the UK, there are approximately 144,220
divorces each year (ONS).
Symptoms
People who have recently divorced often experience anger, denial, depression, disorientation, grief, insomnia, and shock. Some people are relieved to be divorced. Telling children about divorce can be difficult but essential to
avoid them blaming themselves. A child's wellbeing and development will
be helped by each parent supporting a consistent and stable relationship
between the child and the other parent, independent of any animosity
between the parents.
Causes
The causes of divorce, civil partnership and
relationship breakdown, include abuse, addictions, communication problems, falling out of love or into hate, financial problems,
infidelity and sexual incompatibility. Many people try and do save their relationship before considering divorce.
