Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy
I have been practicing as a counsellor since 2002 and during that time I have worked with adults and children and dealt with a large spectrum of emotional difficulties such as self-esteem, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, marriage, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and deprivation. I offer an understanding to my clients of why they feel and behave in the way that they do, and through this understanding to transform their experiences so that they can live a more happy and fulfilled life.
I use the person centred approach with its core conditions, as well as using the Systemic model. This model helps my awareness of the wider context which furthers my understanding of the person's world, and helps me to bring forth 'patterns that connect'. This then gives me a deeper awareness that I connect to attachment theory, whereby I look at the relationship between myself and the adult or child that I am working with as well as other important attachment figures in their lives and how they inter connect.
For the past five years I have been working as a school counsellor. I am able to enter a child's frame of reference and give the child the space through play to voice their feelings and how they feel and facilitate them to understand why they have placed themselves where they have vis a vis the others.
I listen to the client's narrative with their interest in mind, in a safe environment with rules and boundaries, as I work within the Ethical Framework of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
I have worked in various NHS CAMHS family therapy teams and offered family therapy to families experiencing relationship issues. I have worked as manager of family services in a wellbeing centre for five years. I worked as a freelance counsellor to vulnerable adolescents and young adults in a sheltered housing scheme. I also run a part time private counselling practice where I have referrals from GPs, self-referrals and private agencies.
What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy
When I integrate the systemic approach it allows me to see the client as a relational being expect to feel unique but in order to understand that uniqueness I find it important to also move beyond thinking in terms of the individual and focus on the system within which the client lives. e.g. social systems, family patterns etc. I bring forth 'patterns that connect'. This helps the client to understand their patterns and others' patterns in relating. This insight help the client get a clearer understanding of of the systems in place and with that understanding they become more aware of their choices and can implement change.Working with the person centred and systemic theories means that I can help clients retain their sense of identity and separateness whilst becoming aware of their specific role within a system.

Additional Information
I use my awareness to increase my understanding of what takes place between myself and my client. I believe that to use the core conditions successfully a therapist must have self-awareness. When I feel empathy it's about feeling with the client and I also need to think who does my feeling belong to - is it mine or the clients? When I am congruent I need to be self-aware of who I am to be able to be open and real to the client.
