Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy

I have been practicing as a counsellor and psychotherapist with adults from a wide variety of social and cultural backgrounds since 2006. As an NHS counsellor I have worked with adults suffering severe and enduring mental health issues while my general practice, both within the NHS and privately, is concerned with commonly-encountered, everyday experiences such as: relationship difficulties, anxiety, depression, stress and work-related issues including the impact of redundancy. I am particularly interested in the issues that arise from the death of a sibling and in the process of successfully integrating your past experience into the life you are leading today.

What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy

Our first meeting will be an opportunity for us to consider how we might work together; you will be under no obligation to continue with me and, should I feel that I cannot offer what would be best for you, I will suggest a possible alternative.

My primary objective is to understand what has brought you to me at this time; any questions I may ask you about past events in your life will be to enable us to consider the contribution they may be making to the distress you are currently experiencing.

As an Integrative psychotherapist I draw on a range of skills in order to tailor my approach to your specific needs. I provide an environment in which you can tell me, in confidence and with safety, what is bothering you and you will have my support and encouragement to make changes that could lead to life feeling better for you. My overall aim is to enable you to feel more at ease, better able to manage the challenges you encounter and generally able to derive enjoyment and satisfaction from your life.

If there is a specific problem that you are seeking to resolve, I would suggest brief (6-12 sessions), solution-focused counselling in which we would concentrate primarily on that issue. For deeper, more fundamental concerns, open-ended psychotherapy on a longer term basis would be my recommendation. If we initially agree 6-12 sessions, continuing for longer would, of course, also be an option.

Should we agree to work together, we will meet for 50 minutes at the same time and on the same day each week - or more frequently if we agree that to be a better option. You will be free to terminate your counselling and psychotherapy at any time although a mutually agreed, planned ending will always be better than an abrupt, possibly impulsive finish. For my part, I will give you advance notice of any planned therapy breaks.

Clinical Qualifications in Counselling and Psychotherapy

Additional Information

Having previously worked as a research scientist in universities in the UK and abroad, I am familiar with the vagaries of academic life and continue to work as an academic supervisor for trainee counsellors and psychotherapists.

For many years I was additionally a negotiator internationally on behalf of industry and am therefore acquainted with the pressures of corporate life as well as experienced in working with people for whom English is not their first language.
