Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychology

A Chartered Psychologist, my understanding of human behaviour is informed through wide ranging and extensive experience in counselling for over 20 years. My insight is also built on rich and extensive business experience in previous roles as a Senior Consultant in career coaching in diverse sectors, Assistant Vice President in Management Development and Recruitment in a pressured business sector, and as Assistant Director in a major international consultancy. As well as seeing client's who self refer for a variety of issues, - these are listed elsewhere but include abuse, anxiety, depression, stress,self-esteem, relationship problems, trauma, I am also used by leading insurance and rehabilitation companies to counsel "victims" of high stress events or traumas such as robberies and serious accidents. I use an integrative approach to counselling, which includes Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). I strongly believe in tailoring therapy to each individual and the approach and techniques are agreed with the client after a thorough assessment. I am "streetwise" friendly, approachable, understanding and put people at their ease very quickly. I passionately believe in the uniqueness of each individual and that crises and trauma in life can often be opportunities for us to grow.

What to Expect during Counselling and Psychology

The first contact

Counselling usually starts with a brief phone call to set up the first assessment session. In this first phone call we sort out whether suitable mutually convenient times can be arranged for therapy.

Assessment session

Counselling always starts with a first assessment session. This is a little bit longer than the usual sessions - the assessment session is usually 60 minutes. In this I will ask you a lot of questions about your life now, and in the past, including relationships, work and social life, health issues, how you are feeling and thinking. I may give you some short tests to complete.

This is to give me quickly an understanding of you and your problems and enable me to make some decisions about what sort of counselling may best enable you to meet your goals. You can ask what questions you have about therapy. At the end of this first session I will give you some idea of how long I think your therapy will take (this can only be an approximation and may change if new material or client goals are introduced into the work). After this session you may take time to decide whether you would like to continue with your therapy or not. You can then contact me and make further appointments if you decide to continue.

Therapy Sessions

Length and frequency

Usually last 50 minutes and are typically arranged weekly. However, sometimes they are less frequent and sometimes they are longer and can last1.5 hours. The length and the frequency will depend on the nature of the work, for example, Trauma sessions may last 1.5 hours or say coaching may take place at monthly intervals.

Approach, Content and Style

I will take whatever approach is suitable given your goals and issues. So the content and progress of therapy really can vary widely. Sometimes it is very active with lots of practicing new behaviours in between sessions and at other times it is slower enabling a gentle and deep exploration of sensitive feelings. So, you may for example, talk through how you are thinking or feeling - it can be helpful to have these validated at times. You may be exploring options for new courses of action, or ways of behaving. At other times you may want to discuss and explore alternative ways of seeing things. You may be working through thoughts and feelings related to childhood or earlier life events using more in depth approaches such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing). You may be asked to do work inbetween the sessions, such as record how you were feeling or thinking, or to do some reading, or to practice new behaviours. The work is reviewed between me and yourself at intervals mutually agreed, to decide how it is progressing.

Number of Sessions

The number of sessions usually varies between about 6 - 20 but of course longer term therapy addressing deep-rooted childhood issues may take considerably longer, for example 12-18 months. My experience is that often clients know themselves whether they are going to need to a shorter course of therapy or that their issues are deeply rooted in childhood and will therefore naturally take longer.

Clinical Qualifications in Counselling and Psychology
