Clinical Experience in Psychology and Psychotherapy
I am a Chartered Psychologist with expertise in working with three main client groups - people with a chronic illness, mothers and professionals.
I am a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist accredited by the British Association For Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) and a member of the Health Professional Council (HPC) and the British Psychological Society (BPS).
I have chosen to focus my practice on three main client groups (people with a chronic illness, mothers and professionals) to enable me to develop an expertise and keep up to date with current research in these chosen areas.
I am a chartered health psychologist with experience of working in University, NHS and private practice settings. I have written several books, book chapters and scientific journals in the field of health psychology. I am currently conducting research in into the experience of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy and transitions within motherhood.
I have chosen to work with people with a chronic illness due to several years of working in the NHS and seeing that the psychological aspect of experiencing a chronic illness is often not a priority. However it is the psychological aspects of a chronic illness that is often very important to patients.
After having my daughter I became interested in the psychology of motherhood. After talking with numerous mothers, I realised that mothers often need a space to discuss their personal journey without judgement or a need to live up to expectations.
I have years of experience of working with professionals to help them deal with stress in the workplace and the stress of public speaking.
What to Expect during Psychology and Psychotherapy
I work collaboratively with my clients, using cognitive behavioural therapy. I believe that each client is unique therefore I place an emphasis on finding the right techniques for each person. I qualified as a chartered psychologist in 1999 so I have years of experience to draw upon in finding what is right for each client. In my sessions the client is an active participant. Some clients have described this as feeling like they have a personal life trainer. While CBT focuses on the here and now, I believe that recognising how past experiences are related to the current issue is important. So I do ask questions about the past to help piece together what factors are part of the current issue. This helps to build a clearer picture of the client?s issue but it is not the focus of the therapy.
