Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychology
I have extensive experience of working with adults within the NHS and the voluntary sector. I worked at the 'Munro Centre' in Guy’s Hospital, 'Hammersmith and Fulham Mind' and 'Richmond Counselling and Psychotherapy Service'.
I work with clients exhibiting a varied range of symptoms and difficulties, such as: depression, isolation, confusion, anxiety, eating disorders, panic attack, stress, self-esteem and relationship difficulties.
What to Expect during Counselling and Psychology
My theoretical orientation is integrative combining Psychodynamic (Object-Relations) and Existential-Phenomenological approaches. From a Psychodynamic perspective I will try to understand together with you how the early relationships that you had with significant others in your life formed the way you view yourself today; the relationships you have with yourself and other people; the way that you perceive the world and life in general and the possibilities you can imagine that are available for you.
Your early relationships will be disclosed in the therapeutic relationship that you will form with me and this will be used as a tool for understanding, growth and change. This approach involves long-term, in-depth exploration from one up to several years.
I am also influenced by the Existential approach, which is rooted in the writings of existential philosophers. These philosophers explored the fundamentals of human existence: what does it mean to live as a human being in the world?
Living invites many challenges such as finding meaning, making choices, facing death, relatedness versus isolation and more. Existential therapy focuses on understanding your experience of living - what it means to be you, for example: how do you make sense of your life and your relationships?; what are your strengths and limitations?; what are your possibilities and choices?
This process of exploration could increase your knowledge of yourself and the way you live and consequently could challenge current choices and help you discover new possibilities.
In addition I offer a time-limited (16-24 sessions) Cognitive analytic Therapy (CAT). This is a time-limited therapy which focuses on repeating patterns that were set up in your childhood as a way of coping with emotional difficulties and deprivations. Using the CAT model, we will work together to recognise maladaptive patterns and then to revise and change them. CAT is particularly helpful in identifying and changing relationship patterns that continue throughout life and are difficult to change without help. CAT is a more structured, directive model and will involve work and practice on your part between sessions.
