Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy
I am a British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Accredited Counsellor and Psychotherapist. I’ve been working as a psychotherapist since 1999, and am now in private practice seeing clients for counselling and psychotherapy in Clapham. I offer a wide range of therapy and personal development services, dealing with various issues including anxiety, depression and loss. My particular interest is in issues around identity, self-esteem, isolation and life transitions. I've worked in various roles offering assistance to people suffering from difficulty or distress in their lives. I have crisis support experience, and before my practice as a psychotherapist, I worked in the legal profession dealing with domestic violence, family and welfare issues.
I am currently Director of Clinical Services at The Awareness Centre in South London, and my organisational work includes managing a team of 25 counsellors providing counselling services to 5 NHS surgeries in Lambeth. I am a qualified clinical supervisor, supervising both NHS and private practitioners.
As a development of my psychotherapeutic work, I have a particular interest in workplace problems. I have experience as both a manager and a trainer. I conduct executive coaching and employee support, helping people to address the many pressures they face in the modern workplace. This workplace issues expertise is informed by my legal experience in the commercial sector, which has included work in a city law firm and a large plc.
What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy
My approach in counselling and psychotherapy is an integration of my original training in transactional analysis and my subsequent training and development as a psychoanalytic practitioner.Therapy offers you the opportunity to discuss what you may not be able to share elsewhere. I have seen repeatedly that once people have a safe confidential space to put their experience into words, they are able to manage and deal with how they feel more effectively. They become more emotionally resilient and find new options in relation to old behaviours. Most pressing issues represent a struggle with underlying historical issues and conflicts - self-awareness provides the opportunity to move away from the resulting patterns and repetitions.
As well as dealing with the past, therapy provides the space to give some attention to your current relationships and how you wish to pursue your life. People are extremely varied in what they desire, what troubles them, and what makes them happier. Each therapy has to reflect the unique needs of each person. I believe that anyone can benefit from discussing what is meaningful to them and what they want from their life. I’ve worked with people from all walks of life, and I’m sensitive to the wide variety of values and lifestyles that people pursue in contemporary society.
In my current practice, I offer weekly or twice weekly sessions – some people attend on an open ended basis, others use sessions until a particular issue has been resolved.
