Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy

I come from a background in General and Psychiatric Nursing and have worked as a counsellor since 1989. I have been employed by the NHS in a Psychiatric Day Hospital where I co-ordinated the counselling service for nine years, working with individuals aged 18 years of age and above with moderate to severe mental health issues. I have been a member of a London University counselling scheme undertaking time-limited and long term therapy with students. My experience of Employee Assistance Counselling has been with private, NHS and local counselling organisations, over a period of seven years. Since 1993 I have worked as a counsellor and then psychotherapist in private practice. I have facilitated various training courses on counselling skills, psychodynamic theory/practice and working with survivors of childhood sexual abuse. I have also run psychotherapy, support groups and anxiety management workshops for clients. I am a qualified counselling supervisor, providing individual and group supervision to counsellors and therapists working in the statutory and charity sectors. Currently I provide clinical supervision to counsellors working in a domestic violence agency as well as running a private supervision practice. As a graduate of Westminster Pastoral Foundation Counselling and Psychotherapy I have undergone personal therapy and am in regular ongoing supervision. While I am qualified to practise in-depth work I vary the intensity and focus according to your needs. I have a clinical practice in London and Saffron Walden.

What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy

As a Counsellor and Psychotherapist I provide a safe, professional relationship within which you can explore difficult and often painful emotions and experiences. The type of therapy I offer is based on psychodynamic principles which understand that the difficulties we experience in the present often have their roots in the past and involve both our external and internal worlds, unconscious and conscious processes.

Integrating the work of Carl Jung I recognise the creativity and wisdom of symptoms, dreams and the imagination. I consider that we all have within us the capacity for healing ourselves and this is what I aim to help you develop.

Following an initial consultation which usually takes place over two consecutive sessions, if we agree that I am the most appropriate person to meet your needs, we will formulate a working contract together and set regular review sessions. I will respect and maintain confidentiality in accordance with my professional code of ethics and practice which I will discuss with you at the beginning of the initial consultation.

Clinical Qualifications in Counselling and Psychotherapy

  • UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) Registered Psychotherapist - Psychodynamic Psychotherapist since February 2008
  • British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Senior Accredited (MBACP Snr Accred) Counsellor and Psychotherapist since February 2005 (Accredited since November 1997)

I am committed to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in Counselling and Psychotherapy. I abide by the Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), the Code of Ethics of the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and the Code of Ethics of the Foundation for Psychotherapy and Counselling (FPC) London.

Additional Information

I am currently undertaking a Jungian Sandplay training with the British and Irish Society for Sandplay therapy which I will integrate into my current practice, where appropriate, when I have reached the required level of training. This is a creative form of therapy using the imagination which can be applied to individual work with both adults and children.
