Clinical Experience in Psychotherapy
I am a UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) Registered Psychotherapist with a specialty in addictions. This means that although I see clients with a broad array of issues, I have a specialty in treating substance abuse and addictive behaviours like gambling, internet, and sex addiction.
My clinical experience includes work as an Honorary Psychotherapist at St. Thomas's Hospital London. I also trained in substance abuse and addictive behaviour treatment at the Drug and Alcohol Foundation. Additional training in addictions treatment was obtained at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London.
Research work includes working as an Honorary Clinical Researcher with South London and Maudsley Trust. I have also published in the area of the clinical management of substance abuse.
What to Expect during Psychotherapy
Addiction results from a complex interaction of biological, social, and psychological factors unique to every individual. Commensurately, effective treatment requires a thorough analysis of all three areas as part of the therapeutic engagement.Sessions typically begin with initial discussions of your life and addictive histories. Clients often find it helpful to receive clinical insight into their addictive process by examining the manner in which their addictive substance or behaviour has played a functional role in their lives. Additionally, time is devoted to examining the origins of their addictive process. Specific factual information about the substance or behaviour in question is also provided. Finally, it should be added that clients are invited to use sessions to problem solve, to explore areas of concern in detail, and to create a strategy for returning their lives to a healthier place.
Once an addictive process is under control, I work with you to build a well-rounded plan of action aimed at maintaining your health and abstinence.
Where desired, I work with other specialists, such as GPs and psychiatrists with an addiction specialty, personal trainers, and nutritionists, in order to restore your life to a balanced position.
