Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy
As well as working in private practice in the West End of London as a psychotherapeutic counsellor I am also a counsellor for a national charity. I have a background providing counselling for employee assistance programmes, have been an Associate Counsellor with a large "not for profit" counselling agency and an honorary counsellor with Westminster Pastoral Foundation. I provide individual once weekly, face to face counselling both for time limited periods and on a longer term basis.
What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy
My approach in counselling is called ‘psychodynamic’, where the therapist and client work together to explore the network of relationships that develops during growth into adulthood and how they are brought into the present day. This approach is well regarded and used in the NHS, GP surgeries and hospitals.I offer a collaborative approach to therapy, helping you understand your problems with compassion and acceptance. Working with a trained counsellor helps you recognise your motivations and feelings as well as your deepest held beliefs about yourself and gives you the strength to make new choices in your life.
Counselling is widely recognised as an effective way of dealing with personal problems that stem from unhealthy behaviour patterns helping you understand the patterns, address them and move on.
The counselling relationship is different from other social relationships. It is limited to the counselling session and the confidential counselling space, providing a safe environment in which to investigate past and present feelings and relationships. Exploring your concerns can often help you understand your strengths and build on them to support the changes you want to make.
At first it can be difficult to think or talk about feelings – you may feel embarrassed – but with the guidance of a counsellor it becomes easier. Rather than give advice, the aim of counselling is to help you think about choices and options that you may not have considered before. By understanding more about yourself, and by developing a greater self-awareness, it may be possible to find different ways of thinking about and dealing with painful situations or feelings.
My theorectical influences include Freud, Klein, Winnicott and Lacan and others. I think it is important to consider both the early experiences in our lives and how we negotiate the later challenges that we all face as we grow and develop.
