Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy
I am able to offer once weekly counselling or once or twice weekly psychotherapy in an accessible location near to Stroud.
I have trained as a counsellor and as a psychotherapist and believe I can offer a range of depth and experience as a result of this.
I am trained psychodynamically, which means that I work with the connections between past and present relationships, including the developing therapeutic relationship.
I have an MA in personal and organisational development and worked as a business coach before my clinical training so I am familiar with the world of work and how it can impact on our inner world.
I have been seeing counselling clients with a range of personal and inter-personal difficulties for the last eight years. Since 2008 I have been undertaking additional training as a psychotherapist.
What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy
Often difficult or unresolved relationships from the past can over-determine our responses to current relationships, limiting our ability to fully engage with the present for what it is and the opportunities that life can offer us for personal development, growth and relationship.Therapeutic work allows us to explore together what some of these repeating patterns might mean to you individually and is a unique opportunity to know and think about them together as they are unfolding.
For some people, traumatic experiences in their childhood have meant that whole aspects of their past are lost to them, and sometimes these can be gradually brought into awareness again within a trusting and confidential space.
I will endeavour to work at the pace that you feel comfortable with and not force our progress - the agenda is always yours to bring. I would also be challenging where that felt helpful and appropriate. I believe that psychodynamic work can take time and care.
I try to work with diversity as openly and sensitively as I can, understanding that issues of race and culture, disability, gender, and sexuality interact with what happens to us in our personal lives. It is the quality of the relationship that matters most.
My work is confidential, supervised by a senior colleague, I abide by my professional organisation's code of ethics and I am governed by their complaints procedure.
Initially I find it is helpful to meet for a couple of sessions to see if we feel that we can work productively and creatively together.
