Clinical Experience in Psychotherapy
I am a Systemic and Family Psychotherapist registered with the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), a Registered Mental Nurse (RMN) and a qualified Person Centred Art Therapist.
I have specialized in working with children, adolescents and adults who suffer from a wide range of psychiatric and psychological difficulties. I work individually with adults, with couples and with children, young people and their families.
I have experience in working in and managing services in both specialist inpatient settings and outpatient settings both within the NHS and the private sector. My background and experience also includes research, teaching, training and supervision.
I have held the position of chair person to professional organisations involved in promoting and continuing knowledge to enhance work specific to children and adolescents with eating disorders and to nurses working with this client group. I am a member of the Eating Disorders Research Consortium which is a collaborative group of professionals dedicated to further research with children and adolescents with eating disorders. I have presented internationally on the subject of eating disorders, twins and family therapy.
I have trainings in a variety of approaches including Systemic and Family Therapy, Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), Person Centered Art Therapy (PCAT) Parental Coaching and Couples Therapy. I can offer you the benefit of more than 19 years experience of working with people with Mental Health issues. This enables me to offer an approach that will best meet your needs. These are delivered either on an individual basis or with other members of your family.
I am able to offer specific services to individuals, couples, young people and their families.
When working with children and adolescents I offer a model of working that supports the young person and their family as well as other professionals who may be involved in their care, in tackling what are often extremely complex issues.
I offer assessment, treatment planning, consultation and supervision services.
Even if you are not sure what the problem is, but you just don't feel okay, I can help you to review your current issues and help plan a constructive way forward in managing the next stage of your life.
I offer talks, presentations, focus groups, supervision, Q&A sessions for children and parents as well as teachers, school nurses, school doctors or anyone who has a role in taking care of young people in a formal setting.
What to Expect during Psychotherapy
I will talk with you about your feelings, thoughts, relationships, and important values. At the beginning, therapy sessions are focused on discussing what you'd like to work on and setting goals. Some of the goals people may set include things like:- Improving self-esteem and gaining confidence
- Feeling less depressed or less anxious
- Doing better with friends or schoolwork
- Learning to relate without arguing and managing anger
- Making healthier choices (for example, about relationships or eating) and ending self-defeating behaviours
During the first visit I will probably ask you some questions about yourself and why you have come for therapy and encourage you to talk a bit about yourself. This helps me understand you better. I will ask you about the problems, concerns and symptoms you're having. I will probably explain my understanding of your situation, how therapy could help, and what the process will involve. Together you and I will decide on the goals for therapy and how frequently to meet. Some therapies have a set number of sessions when dealing with specific issues, for example CBT, however, generally, therapy sessions are agreed between you and I and based on your needs. It is important to have reviews built into your therapy plan so you have opportunity to reflect on your sessions and make decisions about how to proceed. Usually this will be a discussion between you and I about how you are doing in achieving the goals you set at the beginning of the therapy.
I might help you learn new skills to help you think about a situation in a new way. For example, therapists can help people develop better relationship skills or coping skills, including ways to build confidence, express feelings or manage anger.
Most therapy is a combination of talking and listening, building trust, and receiving support and guidance. It might take a few meetings with a therapist before a person decides to talk openly. Trust is the most important ingredient in therapy- after all; therapy involves being open and honest with someone and talking about sensitive topics like feelings, ideas, relationships, problems, disappointments and hopes. A therapist is trained to be patient with people who need to take their own time talking about themselves and their situation.
Sticking to the schedule you agree on with your therapist and going to your appointments will ensure you have enough time with your therapist to work out your concerns. If your therapist suggests a schedule that you do not think you will be able to keep, be up front about it so you can work out an alternative.
Remember that this is your therapy and you have a say in how it works so if you have a preference that your therapist has not offered then do ask, most therapists can be flexible to suit your needs. Be sure that the therapist you choose feels right for you.
Systemic therapists help people find constructive ways to help each other both with within and outwith their own family. They work in ways that acknowledge the contexts of people's families and other relationships, sharing and respecting individuals' different perspectives, beliefs, views and stories, and exploring possible ways forward.
