Clinical Experience in Psychotherapy

I am a British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) Registered Psychotherapist. I work with clients experiencing anxiety, bereavement, stress, and relationship issues. I am an experienced psychotherapist who has undergone a rigorous training at a UK leading therapy training institution: wpf therapy. Both my long experience of therapy and my training has enabled me to work with clients in a way that is individual and tailor made to their needs and issues. I will always work with clients ethically and in complete confidentiality. I also always work with full respect for a client's experience, thoughts and feelings. The importance I attach to working in a relational way with my clients is indicated by the fact that I am an active member of the International Association of Relational Psychoanalysts and Psychotherapists. I trained as a business coach, and I also practice as an executive coach. This originated with the experience of being part of the BBC's coaching service. I therefore have in depth knowledge of work related issues. For those clients who are experiencing high levels of anxiety, stress, and panic feelings - whether at work, home or in company, I work with a combination of therapy and mindfulness. The foundation of mindfulness is meditation which many studies have shown to reduce stress and increase feelings of wellbeing.

What to Expect during Psychotherapy

I always work in a unique way with each client, as I believe that all clients experience their difficulties and issues in their own completely individual way. To do this, I draw upon the major strands of thinking within psychoanalysis as well as the Jungian tradition. And I combine these ways of understanding with the newer understandings about attachment and the key role that the therapeutic relationship plays in successful therapy.

But having said this, I need to say that I also work with some guiding principles. The first of these is that I believe that many present day difficulties and experiences come from past events and relationships whose emotional (and sometimes spiritual and bodily) effects continue to have a deep influence because those experiences have not been processed, talked through, and so found a quieter place inside a person. With some clients I work with, it has been essential to their wellbeing that they draw/paint or otherwise produce images of such events/relationships which are a deep source of trouble to them. Such image making, for some people seems key to their being able to successfully process troubling experiences.

I also believe that therapy can often be a place where the wounds of both present and past experiences need a calm, accepting, and forgiving environment in order to heal, and new personal capacities to emerge. Each person entering therapy needs to find the right rhythm for this process to go on. It is part of my responsibility to create a calm accepting environment where the client can feel that they can inhabit whatever state of mind they want to. And that together we can think about that. It is through two people thinking together that many of the internal knots can dissolve.

I also work in the present with my clients. What this means is that present day problems and issues also need to get proper attention from both of us. What often happens is that by clearing up the debris of past difficult, painful events and relationships, there starts to exist inside a person, new and fuller capacities to engage with the challenges of present day life, whatever they may be.

Therapy is often a journey of discovery, which can be both painful and liberating. My approach to this journey is to maintain a curious and open minded stance of support, encouragement and empathy. As a therapist I cannot know all the routes or the details of the journey and its destinations, but I can be a supportive and knowledgeable guide at certain crossroads and ferry points.

Clinical Qualifications in Psychotherapy

I completed my training as a psychodynamic counsellor in 2003 through completing the BACP accredited course at Highgate Counselling Centre. Following on from that, I started my private practice. Since then I have gained the qualification of psychoanalytic psychotherapist from wpf therapy. wpf is acknowledged as one of the UK's leading training institutions in psychodynamic work. This is a rigorous and demanding training and delivers a pluralistic understanding of the major strands of psychotherapy (including Jungian) thinking and practice. The wpf qualification enables me to be on the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) register. I am also very interested in attachment theory and practice and have trained in attachment issues through the main UK attachment training body: CAPP.
