Clinical Experience in Counselling

I am a UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) Registered Psychotherapeutic Counsellor. I have many years' experience of counselling adults in Primary Care who have been diagnosed with anxiety and depression by their GP. Most of these individuals are experiencing problems in the home and at work which originate from troubled relationships. Aware of the shortage of psychotherapeutic services available to people working in the City of London, experiencing similar difficulties, I have set up my private practice in consulting rooms near St. Pauls to provide them with easy access to counselling and psychotherapy. Earlier in my working life I held a position as an Honorary Psychotherapist at a large North London Hospital which led to joining the Primary Care Service. I have recently developed an interest in the particular problems and pressures experienced by young people and have been working in a London university counselling service to develop my skills with them. I have worked with adults all across the life-cycle drawn from many countries and ethnic groups. Whether people have settled in this country or are here on temporary basis I firmly believe therapy is relevant to their lives and have seen them benefit from it. My therapeutic work is evidence-based by CORE, a system commonly used within the Health Service to evaluate the effectiveness of counselling and psychotherapy. Using this evidence I have been able to gain funding from London Primary Care Trust to develop a Brief Psychotherapy Service.

What to Expect during Counselling

If you decide to work with me, we'll identify the areas of life which are troubling you and I'll try to give you some ideas about how I might be able to help. Together we'll decide on a convenient slot for a regular appointment, which will be set aside exclusively for you as long as we agree to meet. The initial contract is for 6 weeks and by the end of that time you should have a sense of how helpful you find therapy and we can discuss whether you'd like to work with me on a short, medium or long-term basis.

I am trained in psychodynamic counselling and have a special interest in the application of attachment theory to therapy. This means that during your therapy we will look at patterns of thinking, feeling and behaviour which cause you pain or prevent you from making the most of your life. In particular, we'll reflect on their impact on your current relationships. We'll consider how these patterns developed in the context of your earlier life and family background. Part of your therapy will involve uncovering dreams and wishes you might not be aware of which can exert a powerful influence on your life. Sometimes the things we do, which cause us problems, also bring secret benefits which, unknown, are hard to give up. Knowledge of your hidden self gives you the opportunity to develop different patterns and gain greater control of your life.

There will be a point in your therapy when you feel increasingly confident about your ability to use your new understanding to live a more fulfilling life. When this happens it is time for us to decide on ending your therapy.

Therapy can be demanding and difficult, but it will also enable you to identify your strengths and the part they play in your achievements and the successful areas of your life. It should excite you, stimulate your curiosity and foster your creativity. Previous clients have commented favourably on the level of interactivity I provide them with and how quickly they gain a sense of progress from our work together.

Additional Information

I set out as a linguist and librarian before realising that my fascination with communication really lay in helping others to understand themselves better and live more satisfying lives. While studying for an MSc in Psychological Counselling, I discovered my interest in the significance of secure and insecure attachments for us all.

I practise in a comfortable consulting room located in a tranquil setting at the heart of the City. Clients are assured of a secure base for self-exploration.
