Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy

I have provided counselling and psychotherapy in Bristol for 8 years. My experience ranges from short term counselling contracts of 4 sessions to long term psychotherapy contracts lasting several years. Most of my clients have had counselling or psychotherapy for 1 to 2 years. I see clients once a week usually, though some clients find it more helpful to come twice a week. Counselling and psychotherapy is usually face to face but some clients find it useful to lie on the couch.

What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy

Many people experience difficulties that can be resolved without outside help. However, sometimes difficulties persist, causing unhappiness at home and at work. This may be because the current situation is stirring up deeper feelings the person is not consciously aware of. Counselling and psychotherapy can help individuals to understand hidden aspects of themselves.

I work psychodynamically and psychoanalytically. Some people think this means focusing on their childhood but this is a misunderstanding. The focus in on current difficulties a person is experiencing and information and knowledge about childhood is used primarily to help make sense of what feels difficult now. Of course sometimes people do want to speak in confidence to someone about issues from their past and feel secure that they will be listened to and not judged. The past cannot be changed but feelings about what happened can be explored and one can hope to come to terms with what felt difficult or unfair.

I provide a reliable setting and the person coming to see me is encouraged to speak about whatever is foremost on his or her mind. The sessions also provide a space for reflection on past or present issues. By listening I hope to help the person to reach a deeper self-understanding, opening the way to change. As our relationship evolves and insights unfold he or she usually discovers more satisfying ways of coping with problems and feelings.
