Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy

I am a UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) Registered Psychotherapist. I work as an individual therapist in the NHS (at the Co-Ordinated Psychological Treatment Service, The Munro Centre, Guys' Hospital) and I also work in private practice. I work face to face with individuals who come with a variety of emotional, relational and identity difficulties. Sessions can be on a short term or longer term basis, depending on the wishes and needs of each client. My general aim is to help you in whatever emotional and psychological difficulties you may be experiencing in your life right now. Listening to your difficulties also often involves my helping you to reach a better understanding of who you are and how you relate to others; and also helping you to identify patterns of relationship which, without insight, can work in us all to inhibit our personal growth and impoverish our everyday life at home and at work and in our intimate and social lives. Therapy has been described as a way of allowing an individual to properly meet him- or herself so as to reach a clearer understanding of who they really are and what they are about. But this 'self-meeting' is rarely something we can do by ourselves: we usually need the safe, respectful and insightful attention of a skilled therapist - someone, above all, who can listen and listen well to whatever is is that you feel the need to talk about. I aim to listen well to you and the difficulties you are experiencing, to help you understand who you are, and to help you move forward in your life.

What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy

I generally work on an integrative basis with a focus, if appropriate, on psycho-dynamics. An integrative approach takes the stance that no single 'model of the mind' is universally agreed in current psychotherapeutic thought. In my own practice, this means that I do not approach you, or the work we might do together, from one fixed theoretical perspective but rather in a non-doctrinaire spirit, so that your own unique way of being with yourself and with others - and with me in the consulting room - can unfold and be met respectfully.

Psycho-dynamics very broadly assume that we bring much of our past relationships - and especially those from our family or our first caregivers - to our present world, often without our recognising it, and often detrimentally so. The work that we do together can involve identifying patterns in your relational life which are causing you difficulties, often binding you in your past rather than allowing you to grow in your present and move forward into your future.
