Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy
I am a UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) Registered Family & Systemic Psychotherapist. I have over 30 years experience of working in social, health and educational contexts, initially as a social worker and then as a family therapist.
My background includes extensive experience of behavioural ways of working with children and adolescents to resolve difficulties. In order to widen my approach I then completed an advanced clinical training in family therapy in 1996.
I have worked as a consultant psychotherapist in a child care organisation and now work in private practice as a family and systemic psychotherapist, clinical supervisor and trainer. I work as a family consultant within the collaborative law process and hold the license for Divorce Support Groups in Cardiff.
I am an experienced family and systemic psychotherapist who has also enjoyed supervising and working with counsellors and therapists with different theoretical backgrounds from my own.
What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy
The number of appointments offered and the time between appointments is a collaborative decision and in that sense each session stands alone. Usually much can be achieved in a relatively short space of time although sometimes it takes people longer to find lasting solutions to their difficulties.Research shows that a systemic approach can help relationship problems as well as a wide range of specific difficulties. These can include: family communication problems, child and adolescent behaviour problems, mental health problems, couple relationship problems, illness and disability in the family, separation, divorce and step-family life, eating disorders, domestic violence, self-harm, the effects of trauma, difficulties relating to ageing and the needs of families where their child has been or is "looked after".
The approach is respectful and focuses on using the resources within people and their communities. It is highly skilled and relies on many years of training.
