Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy
I have extensive experience in counselling and psychotherapy with individuals and couples, working for many years as a counsellor and supervisor in the voluntary sector until 1991 when I began in private practice as a psychotherapist and supervisor.
The range of issues with which I think I can effectively help is wide but in addition I have a special interest in the fields of abuse, trauma, loss and bereavement and am a Registered Trauma Therapist and qualified practitioner in EMDR.
However, my initial training was with Relate, so I also have long and varied experience in working with couples whether straight or gay, or relationship problems in traditional or blended families.
In addition to being a British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Senior Accredited Counsellor and Psychotherapist, I am also a BACP Senior Accredited Supervisor for Individuals and Groups. In this capacity I have worked in both Primary and Secondary care in the NHS and in private hospitals for adults and adolescents such as The Priory.
I have supervised the work of counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists, including students, helpers in the voluntary sector, experienced or Accredited counsellors, other supervisors, also doctors, nurses and other health professionals.
I have also offered trainings to other professionals in abuse of all kinds, vicarious and secondary traumatisation, grief and loss, and how to make the best use of supervision.
What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy
Therapy seems to me to be both a deceptively simple and yet extremely subtle process...On the surface it is a "Conversation" between two people at a pre-arranged time and place. But at a deeper level it is an opportunity to experience a unique relationship with another who will not judge or criticise you, and who is pledged to assist you to find your way towards a more healthful and hopeful way of living. As an Integrative therapist and someone who has had personal therapy, I know that the first session is incredibly important. Even though we might be nervous or anxious about meeting this new person whom we are going to entrust with intimate, sometimes difficult and painful stories from our lives, we usually find we know quite quickly whether we feel comfortable enough to want to continue.
Early in the first session I will offer you my Therapy Working Agreement which you can take away to read and consider (so that I can use all of the first session to find out more about you and your problems). This Agreement outlines the boundaries of confidentiality and the practicalities of how we will work together; I will ask you to sign it and return it at the next session if you decide to continue therapy with me.
Depending on what you tell me in the first session, we will decide what length of therapy would be useful for you. Generally speaking, short-term counselling of six to eight sessions is fine for single issues and setting a reasonable goal. It is also useful as a "taster" if you are new to therapy.
I find it helpful to include some cognitive-behavioural "homework" in solution-focused work and also increasingly use it as an additional tool in medium and longer-term work, where I feel relational and psychodynamic therapy is the better suited.
If you have been living with a particular issue for some time, then we will consider together whether some medium or longer-term therapy is more appropriate. It will always be your decision how much or little therapy you feel is right for you.
