Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy
It is not unusual for people who have always coped to be tipped into depression by a life event, like the loss of a family member, unemployment or illness. Even apparently good events like a promotion can induce paralysing panic or anxiety.
Many of the clients who have come to me in my practice are people who have soldiered on through life. They often have a diagnosis of a depression or anxiety which is now persistently affecting their capacity for enjoyment; accomplishment in work or other spheres; and personal relationships.
I offer time limited psychodynamic counselling (six to twelve sessions), and open-ended psychodynamic counselling.
Prior to qualification I spent many years as a senior executive in a multinational publishing company, and latterly I mentored and coached senior executives, many of them women who had made a rapid shift into board level positions.
What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy
Psychodynamic counselling is a confidential relationship. My training has given me a solid grounding in psychoanalytic theory, which looks to early experiences and sometimes trauma to explain the source of unconscious patterns of behaviour and defences against recurring pain.I work to help the client find the resources that will facilitate a return to what has been described as “the capacity to love and work again.” In the containing space provided by the relationship, the client has an opportunity to create a coherent narrative. The counsellor listens to what is being said, looking for patterns that may give an indication of the source of a problem.
A great English clinician, Donald Winnicott has said that the answer always lies within the client, and our task is to enable the client to find it.
