Clinical Experience in Counselling
I am a British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Accredited Counsellor. I have had a private counselling and psychotherapy practice for a decade.
I also work as a Relationship and Family Counsellor at Relate. In the past I worked as a Telephone Counsellor with Relate Direct for six years. I have a total of twenty years of experience as a Counsellor.
I have added to my experience of working extensively with a range of issues for individuals and couples, by training with the Institute of Family Therapy and Relate to work with families as well.
My consulting room has a peaceful atmosphere. I ensure confidentiality and privacy there. There is ample parking.
What to Expect during Counselling
I want clients to feel safe to talk about issues that are troubling them, so I aim to work at a client's pace and in a style that suits them, be it supportive or more probing and challenging. I hope to help and guide clients to find ways forward that they can use in their everyday lives. After you make contact, we will meet for an initial hour session, when we will talk about the issues which you want to address. By the end of the hour we will come to an agreement about whether you wish to continue. If you do, an initial four to six sessions is often suggested. I aim to be flexible about times and days.
My theoretical approaches are:
Psychodynamic
This means that we look at the past to understand how it impacts on the present, in order to make changes for the future.
Systemic
This involves looking at relationships (family, work, couples etc) and communication and interaction within them.
Both models can be really helpful for individuals, couples and families.
I also offer brief or short term counselling, if appropriate, looking at behavioural changes for a specific issue or issues.
I often incorporate attachment theory, as attachments made during childhood often influence adult relationships.
