Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy

I am a UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) Registered Psychotherapist. I provide counselling and psychotherapy for the above problems. I have over fourteen years post qualification experience working with a range of symptoms and psychological problems in NHS hospitals and in private practice. I offer a confidential service to individuals and couples in distress. As well as Hackney, sessions can also be provided by appointment at The Inner Circle Therapy Centre, Regent's College, Inner Circle, Regents Park, London NW1 4NS. Everyone, at some point in their life will experience distress either through loss of an important relationship, a life transition, low self esteem, career change or some deeply buried memories triggered by a current event. A skillful therapist can help you develop understanding, and adopt coping strategies for constructive change in your life. You can learn how to manage your symptoms and problems so that they do not affect the way you function in personal relationships, at work and with friends and relatives. An initial consultation may be just what you need to decide if therapy or counselling is for you.

What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy

I work interpersonally. This means that I engage in dialogue with clients and share my understandings with them explicitly. My model of working is relational and inter-personal integrating psychodynamic, existential and CBT theories about humans.

Following an assessment session where symptoms and problems are evaluated and discussed, I devise a psychological formulation, a process that identifies the list of problems, symptoms, their possible origins and how these affect the client's life.

This helps to recommend the appropriate treatment, either brief, long term one year or several years. If brief, therapy will focus on specific problems identified and agreed between the client and myself. Because I work in collaboration with the client, the understanding is jointly developed and the client has a say in the process.

I use tools and skills such as focusing on a symptom or problem, exposure to a fear as in phobic reactions and exploration of underlying causes. Often people may suffer from migraines, anxiety, fears, depression or low self esteem without knowing what the cause is. Therapy can be emotionally and psychologically painful because it confronts issues people often deny or avoid, hoping they would go away.

For example, some people may be convinced they are ugly or fat when everyone around them believes the opposite to be true. This is described as a problem with self-perception or body dysmorphic disorder, which often has roots in early childhood trauma. Likewise, people who struggle to develop or maintain intimacy and relationships may be doing well in all other aspects of their life, but fear of rejection or abandonment could make them frightened of closeness.

Keeping diaries is another tool I use to help me situate the problem in the client's everyday routine. Therapy is like detective work, gathering together the evidence, the clues and reaching a clear understanding of the problem before this can be treated.
