What to Expect during Counselling

Counselling sessions
During the first session, you will have the opportunity to receive further information about counselling and ask any questions you might have.

If you would then like to continue, we will look at the issues that have brought you to counselling at this time and the best way for you to proceed.

As the counselling progresses, you will have the opportunity to share your concerns in a relaxed environment without the fear of being judged. This confidential setting can make it easier to talk more freely about your problems and gain greater understanding of yourself and your life.

Some of the different theoretical approaches I use are:

Integrative
I work as an integrative counsellor and have experience and training in a number of theoretical approaches which enables me to tailor the sessions to the individual needs of my clients. I find this an effective way of working as it takes into account the individuality of my clients and their unique personalities and lives.

Person centred
I usually begin the counselling with this non directive approach which sees people as full of potential for growth if given the right environment. My aim for the counselling sessions is to give my clients the right therapeutic environment to help them progress and find their own way forwards.

CBT
I also use cognitive behaviour therapy that helps clients to challenge their thinking behind unhelpful behaviour. This can enable them to replace these with more helpful thoughts and ideas to bring about the changes they need.

Psychodynamic
This approach helps clients to explore their past experiences and look at any unhelpful defences they may have put into place that could be affecting their lives now.

Symbolic Modelling
This is an effective questioning technique that enables clients to work instinctively and imaginatively to unlock the door to deeper levels of understanding. It helps them to discover the hidden resources within them, recognise the choices they have and become more aware their own strengths and abilities so they can find their own way forward.

In all my counselling work I always aim to use the therapeutic approach that is most helpful for my clients and their individual needs.

Clinical Qualifications in Counselling

I am a qualified counsellor at the Advanced Diploma level in Therapeutic counselling with experience and additional training in telephone counselling and support work.

I am a UKRCP Registered Independent Counsellor and an Accredited Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. As a member of the BACP, I follow their ethical framework for good practice.
