As a British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Member (MBACP) Counsellor and Psychotherapist, British Psychological Society (BPS) Chartered Counselling Psychologist (CPsychol) and Health Professions Council (HPC) Registered Counselling Psychologist, I am highly trained and experienced in using Brief Therapy, Client Centred Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR), Integrative Therapy, Person Centred Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy (SFT) and Systemic Therapy to assist people to get through the difficulties they experience.
Brief Therapy
Brief Therapy is short-term and is focused on a particular issue the Client feels the need to work on. Therapy includes setting achievable goals, and then setting small tasks between sessions that increase the Client's confidence and make the solution to the problem seem a lot more achievable. Generally 5 to 8 sessions: depends on issue and other factors.
Client Centred Therapy
Client Centred Therapy aims to create a safe environment to enable the Client to gain greater insight and self-awareness. It is very useful exploratory work and the sessions flow according to the Client's needs and expectations and issues raised at each session. It is highly supportive. Generally 16 to 24 sessions: depends on issue and other factors.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
CBT is aimed at helping the Client to recognise how certain beliefs about oneself, the world and others, affect their thoughts and thus their behaviour. Therapy is very collaborative and the aim is to enable the Client to recognise dysfunctional thoughts and behaviours and helpful and manageable ones. Generally 8 to 12 sessions: depends on issue and other factors.
Cognitive Therapy
Cognitive Therapy is very similar to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). However the emphasis is on challenging dysfunctional beliefs and thus altering the thoughts that perpetuate a cycle of negative thinking. The tasks in therapy are more focused in teaching how to identify and challenge negative thoughts. Generally 8 to 12 sessions: depends on issue and other factors.
Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is a very useful intervention for people who have traumatic experience(s) which, even though many years have possibly passed since the traumatic event, still influence and hinder the person's everyday life and functioning. For people who have experienced accidents, bullying, persecution, torture, rape or phobias. Generally 10 to 15 sessions: depends on issue and other factors.
Integrative Therapy
Integrative Therapy is an amalgamation or integration of all therapeutic approaches. It is a type of therapy where the focus is always adapted to the needs and personality of the Client. Integrative Therapy focuses on self-awareness, but also on cognitive and behavioural change. Generally 16 to 40 sessions: depends on issue and other factors.
Person Centred Therapy
Person Centred Therapy focuses on creating a non-judgemental environment, within which the Client can experience unconditional acceptance. The Client can gradually learn to accept oneself and promote change. It is very useful for therapy with children and also on bereavement and grief issues. Generally 16 to 24 sessions: depends on issue and other factors.
Psychodynamic Therapy
Psychodynamic Therapy is often misunderstood. The philosophy is that a person is a product of their past experiences, how they grew up, their environment and so on. The aim is to gain knowledge of how the past has shaped the present and links to current beliefs. Generally 40 to 50 sessions: depends on issue and other factors.
Solution Focused Therapy (SFT)
SFT is a short-term therapy which focuses on collaboratively finding a solution to a current and particular concern the Client experiences. The Client thinks how their life would be without the problem and then tasks are set that bring them closer to a life without the problem. Generally 6 to 10 sessions: depends on issue and other factors.
Systemic Therapy
Systemic Therapy is appropriate when working with Couples and Families. They examine with the Therapist how they all interact with each other and identify how each one contributes to unhelpful dynamics in the relationship. Then they all work together to change these dynamics. Generally 15 to 25 sessions: depends on issue and other factors.
