Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy

I have worked with people from many different cultures, religions, social backgrounds, life-styles and environments throughout my working life, both in the UK and abroad, as a social worker, community worker, health worker, counsellor and psychotherapist. I qualified as a counsellor and psychotherapist nineteen years ago, and have since worked constantly within the NHS and in private practice in these capacities. During that time I have acquired an extensive and mature experience of a large range of difficulties, and adapted to each individual's different needs. My wide experience and trainings, mean that I have a range of skills and viewpoints to offer, which hopefully means I can provide a more individually appropriate and effective service. I also use Decision Analysis. This is a brief focused tool for facilitating the making of problematic decisions. It is non-intrusive, transferable and rarely takes more than two sessions. One is often enough. Then you have a tool for the rest of your life! It is extremely useful for individuals, couples or for professional decisions.

What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy

I am not the sort of therapist who sits in silence. I think it is important for you to feel comfortable and that we are part of a shared project. I feel that the social and political world you live in may have a powerful effect and meaning for you. I aim to include an awareness of this throughout our work. Injustice or discrimination, for instance, can affect us at a deep level.

My 'core' training was psychodynamic which is based on psychoanalytic theory. This assumes that much of what we find problematic is a reflection of our experiences in childhood and how we understood them. It also often uses the experience of the therapy as a useful tool in getting glimpses of understanding of what happens outside in your ordinary life.

I have, however, done several other trainings, and used other models for my own personal growth. This means that I have a wider range of ways of understanding, and responding to your personal story, which makes my practice more confident, flexible and effective.
