Clinical Experience in Counselling

Hello, My name is Linda Walker, welcome to my profile. I have been working as a counsellor for twenty years. I have a Diploma in Counselling from UWE. I am a British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Accredited Counsellor. In my counselling and psychotherapy practice I work with general issues. I also have specific experience in the area of alcohol and drug addiction, and have worked at the Terence Higgins Trust with people living with HIV and AIDS. I also worked with students of all ages at UWE and on the MIND Telephone help line working with callers who were often in severe mental distress. I have recently begun to train to work at the Penny Brohn Cancer Care centre on the help line responding to callers who are living with cancer or their friends or family.

What to Expect during Counselling

My theoretical approach to counselling and psychotherapy is an integration of the person centred and psychodynamic approaches.

When I began training I read Carl Rogers, who developed person centred therapy, and was drawn to the values he espoused in his approach. Rogers ideas were based on the belief we all have within us the potential to grow and change and work through difficulties, and that this can be helped by spending time with a therapist who will listen non-judgementally and with empathy. This forms the basis of the way I work.

I also bring in psychodynamic thinking which looks at the impact of the unconscious on thinking, feeling and ways of behaving and works with the idea that certain events in childhood can have an impact on the present.

I also may use some more practical ways of working to address some of the day to day difficulties you may be experiencing such as writing down your thoughts, drawing or practising things you may find cause you stress and then coming back and exploring how that was for you. An example might be fear of going out or being in crowded places.

I enjoy working with dreams and find this way of working can be helpful to clients

I encourage clients to bring their dreams to the sessions.

Clinical Qualifications in Counselling

  • British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Accredited (MBACP Accred) Counsellor since 2008

I am committed to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in Counselling. I abide by the Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

Additional Information

I am in my late 50's, with adult children. I came into the field of counselling following the birth of my third child. A period of post natal depression led me to seek counselling myself and I then decided to train as a counsellor.

I enjoy arts and crafts work and practise mindfulness meditation which I find gives me support and a spiritual dimension to my life.
