I specialise in counselling face to face.I have experience in dealing with sexual abuse, bereavement issues, relationships both at home and at work, anxiety, feelings of low self-esteem and self-worth, and help with adjusting to new situations - gaining control in one's life.
I have many years experience in dealing with disability or health issues, particularly with people who are trying to come to terms with health or disability issues.
All information disclosed to me is strictly confidential. However, should I feel a client is of danger to his/herself or to others I reserve the right to inform outside agencies. This will not be done without, wherever possible discussing it with the client first.
Sessions last for sixty minutes. It is important that sessions are consistent, as this forms a good structure from which the counselling takes place.
The number of sessions required depends on the issues presented and this is discussed and agreed jointly.
Sessions are reviewed on a regular basis as this facilitates the opportunity to assess progress and identify outstanding problems.
How I Work
I like to work Psychodynamically and can also work using an integrative approach. I appreciate for many clients that therapy is difficult for them, I try therefore to make the sessions 'user friendly' that is to say, I try to help the client get to the heart of the presenting issues by being non-judgemental and supportive.I try and enable clients to understand the origins and development of emotional difficulties, thus leading to a capacity to take control over feelings and emotions.
When necessary, to help clients relate with others, becoming more able to form and maintain meaningful relationships with other people, for example, in the workplace, family and friends.
To help with issues regarding self-awareness, becoming aware of thoughts and feelings which have been blocked off or denied. To develop a more accurate sense of how they are perceived by others.
To become self-accepting. This is the positive attitude towards one's self. To develop an ability to acknowledge areas of experience that had been the subject of self-criticism and rejection.
Problem solving, helping the client to find a solution to a specific problem that the client has not been able to resolve alone.
The understanding of behaviour and the ability to acquire techniques of control. To learn social and interpersonal skills such as making eye contact, turn-taking in conversations, assertiveness and anger control.
Clinical Training in Counselling
A lot of my clinical experience is to do with loss. This could cover the loss of a partner or child, the loss of a childhood through sexual abuse. The loss of self-esteem or self-worth from ongoing mental and/or physical abuse. The loss of the ability to do things that were previously well within your capabilities i.e. disability or health issues.Additional Information from Cheryl Denise England
