Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy

I am a UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) Registered Psychotherapist, and a British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Accredited Counsellor. I provide counselling and psychotherapy in the Brighton and Hove area. I have worked for over twenty five years as a counsellor and psychotherapist, within the NHS and in private practice. I can provide short term therapy which is limited to a set number of sessions, or long term therapy which is open ended.

What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy

My main training is in Integrative Psychotherapy, but I have also trained in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy.

My therapeutic work is based on the belief that we all as human beings try to find some way of making meaning of our lives. Life throws up challenges to most people - through relationship problems or loss or other difficult experiences - and sometimes these challenges are too hard to deal with on our own, or with family or friends. I think that we all have the potential for personal growth, and to overcome our problems, but we sometimes need help from a therapist to help us along the way.

When I begin work with someone I try to find out as much as possible about the problem and how it looks from their point of view. I use my training and experience to work out what type of help would suit them. I aim to provide a safe and confidential space where they can feel free to explore what is probably a difficult and distressing subject.

Over the years, I have found that it is the quality of the therapeutic relationship that helps people to uncover and resolve their difficulties. For that reason, I think the most important thing to find out about a therapist is 'do you feel comfortable working with them and do you feel you could trust them?' It's important to have someone who is qualified and experienced, but which particular technique they use is less important, I believe.

I have a wide knowledge of psychological problems, based on working in the NHS and in private practice. I use a range of therapeutic techniques, including some from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). The benefit of being an Integrative practitioner is that I can tailor the work to the individual I am seeing. No two people are alike so no therapy is alike either.
