Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy

My name is Francesca Weinberg and I have been a psychotherapist in Muswell Hill and Crouch End, North London for the past 15 years. I work within a holistic framework combining my psychodynamic training with a focus on the mind-body connection. I provide psychotherapy in a safe, confidential and non-judgemental environment, allowing space for the positive as well as the painful. I work with clients for an agreed time period or an open ended basis according to need. The best way forward is discussed together at our initial session.

What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy

Psychodynamic therapy is based on the assumption that we possess a conscious and unconscious mind and that early relationships in life are formative in how we feel, think and act later as adults. Feelings become buried in the unconscious because they are uncomfortable or cause us pain and we develop protective coping strategies or defences to keep them out of awareness. However, while some defences are healthy, others keep us disconnected from ourselves and others. The counselling process involves seeking to reconnect to our emotions and to find meaning in self destructive behaviour patterns that we unconsciously repeat, so that the future can be different from the past. This is not always easy to do but requires trust and confidence in the therapist.

'Giving sorrow words' can be a powerful therapeutic experience especially when one has struggled alone with difficult or distressing feelings for some time. My experience as a therapist has demonstrated to me time and time again that it is by gently confronting and going into those fearful feelings one would prefer to avoid, that paradoxically one finds a way through to greater self awareness and acceptance. This in turn enhances the capacity to choose options for conscious action rather than mindless repetition.
