What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy
I offer a non-judgemental, collaborative and encouraging professional relationship, to support you in actively addressing your challenges, needs and goals.Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) covers a range of approaches that help you improve the way you feel about yourself and others and handle life situations, by identifying unhelpful thinking and actions, and developing your ability to address challenges with healthy, balanced and wise ways of thinking and responding in both the short and longer term. CBT is about helping you act in your own best interest rather than unintentionally against yourself.
All CBT approaches are carefully developed on the basis of thorough research. The type of CBT approach used will vary from client to client according to each individuals' particular issues, needs and preferred way of working. This means CBT is a client centred and solution focused way of working that is specifically tailored to you.
CBT has a practical, solution focused approach to problem solving, designed to enable you to respond to life's challenges with resourcefulness and confidence.
CBT is about learning through experiencing, experimenting and trying things out - not just talking! Through this experiential learning, CBT can teach you skills for building relationships, handling life situations, responding to challenging scenarios and dealing with problems. These can include techniques to help you relax, get grounded and stay centred. It can include training in assertiveness, effective public speaking, or communication skills that help you develop greater closeness with others or handle disagreement and resolve conflict. My CBT approach can also help you learn skills to handle strong - maybe overwhelming - physical and emotional feelings, and helpfully respond to your underlying needs. You can learn skills to develop concentration, awareness and the ability to problem solve more intuitively, wisely and effectively in any future situation as well as the here and now.
I work with an interpersonal and collaborative approach which means your ideas and perspectives are genuinely sought out, including your perspectives on the therapy relationship. You are given the encouragement and empowerment to shape your own path and to arrive at decisions in a mature and insightful way, which takes interpersonal relationships into consideration. This is designed to give you the confidence, self esteem and skills to develop more empowering, authentic and mutually respectful relationships elsewhere in your life.
I can also offer you the benefit of an integrative approach, by drawing on other therapy models as appropriate to your particular needs. For example, if you are living a very fast paced, stressful city lifestyle which is depleting your energy, drawing on Eco-therapy may help you reconnect with a more personally - and environmentally - sustainable lifestyle, that's more in tune with your body's natural rhythms, and supports your longer-term stability and wellbeing.
You may feel that you have lost a deeper sense of direction in your life, in which case, CBT combined with a transpersonal approach could help you discover a sense of real purpose and meaning to your life. You may also find that you are able to reveal very personal matters, with complete confidentiality, and finding a place of compassion and acceptance, or perhaps forgiveness, may be deeply healing for you.
