Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy
I am a British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Accredited Psychotherapist. I have accumulated over twelve years counselling experience in different psychotherapy settings, and worked across London, Kent, Surrey and Sussex. I began as a volunteer at The Samaritans, and for twelve years was the behind the scenes psychotherapist on an ITV daytime programme, 'This Morning', which covered an extensive range of issues and personal problems.
A recent focus has been substance misuse; I have comprehensive knowledge and experience of working in the addiction field and have a proven track record of success in this area.
What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy
In counselling and psychotherapy, I mainly use an existential approach, but I have also trained in Humanistic, Psychoanalytic and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) models, and draw upon different approaches depending on each individual client.Existential therapy emphasizes 'free will' - the ability to make choices that are not dictated by heredity or past conditioning, through which an individual can become the person they want to be. My aim as a counsellor is to help the client develop their insight, awareness and self-understanding. We are not trying to merely explain ‘why’ things happen to be the way they are, but instead to describe ‘how’ we find ourselves to be. Existential therapy attempts to restore meaning to life so that the client is inspired to have the courage to make choices that are rewarding and constructive.
The sessions tend to be conversational in style and are a collaborative process, whereby the client and myself develop a clear picture of their world, relationships and feelings. Therapy sessions last for fifty minutes and I work weekdays, offering both daytime and evening slots. Clients may come to me for a short period of time whilst others want longer term therapy lasting many months and even years.
