Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy
I have practised as a Drug and Alcohol specialist, a manager in the NHS and a Counsellor and Psychotherapist in both inpatient and outpatient settings. I have worked with males and females from 16 years of age up to 70, and in varying states of distress. The majority of my work has been on a one to one basis; and where a collaborative spirit is present. I provide therapy to adults on an individual basis; some come to work on a specific problem, while others attend for longer periods of time for more indepth work. Although I have appreciated my experience in statutory organisations I view recent changes in state provided therapy with disdain, and prefer to work with individuals on a private basis; believing it more appropriate to the personal nature of therapy.
What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy
Frustration, excitement, sadness, tears, laughter, and frankly sometimes even boredom! It's difficult to say what anyone will expect when attending therapy, each person will have their own journey to deal with. The aim is to gain insight and develop a better relationship with ourselves. This does not always run smoothly and it can be a very difficult process, but similarly a potentially rewarding one. You will not be told what to do, but you will have a space and a relationship from which to develop the one with yourself. The first session is to decide whether we can work together, what your expectations are and what I believe I can provide. There is no obligation to continue after this, it can be useful to meet with a few therapists before deciding whom to work with.Existential Therapy - A Philosophical based understanding of human issues and experience. It emphasises the role of choice in our actions (amongst others), and encourages a wider view of personal issues.
Integrative Therapy - A catch all term, employed to denote therapists who may use certain strategies from a certain approach, whilst not explicitly ascribing wholly to the model. For example, much cognitive work takes place in psychodynamic therapies, but personally I would not call myself a CBT therapist.
Psychodynamic Therapy - This is my main approach. For me, this is the one that makes most sense of life. There is a greater focus upon developmental history, the existence (and role) of the unconscious, the need to manage inevitable internal conflict - and our responsibility to know ourselves. Most current psychodynamic practitioners eschew the 'blank slate' parody of Freudian times in favour of a more transparent and collaborative therapeutic relationship. I particularly value the ideas of Jung when conducting therapy.
