Clinical Experience in Counselling
I have been working as a counsellor in private practice for a number of years, working with individual clients to whom I offer short and long term therapy. I work from my consulting room at home in Temple Fortune. I also work as a couples counsellor at a Relate Centre in Hertfordshire.
What to Expect during Counselling
My main approach to counselling is person centred, based on the work of Carl Rogers who believed that all living organisms are subject to a natural law called the "actualising tendency". This means that every living thing strives to reach its potential even though obstacles may temporarily hinder its growth towards wholeness. It is my belief that people possess a basic goodness or purity, and given favourable conditions they will endeavour to become what Rogers termed "fully functioning" human beings, by taking charge of their lives and overcoming their self limiting beliefs. These beliefs were developed in early childhood when we learned to live up to others' (parents, teachers, friends) expectations of us and we started to behave in ways which earn us love attention and recognition.
Later on, in order to be "worthy" in other peoples' eyes, we suppress our real selves and block out certain feelings and behaviour that may not be acceptable. In adulthood, very few of us really love and accept ourselves fully and we develop a "false" self or persona, while the suppressed parts of our personality remain hidden to ourselves and others. This often results in us feeling isolated, disempowered, depressed or lacking self belief.
In order to facilitate the process of self discovery, I offer my clients empathy, meaning I do my utmost to understand the world through their eyes. I also do my best to adopt a non judgmental and respectful approach and create a safe, trusting and confidential environment for individuals to open up and explore their feelings.
For me, therapy is a collaborative effort at understanding causes and finding solutions to present problems. Rather than setting myself up as an expert, I hold the belief that deep within, a person already has the key to solving his problems but is unable to know where to start. The counsellor is thus needed to facilitate a process in which the client may find his own solutions.
In my experience the therapeutic relationship and process enables people to relate differently to themselves and their lives; through a greater understanding and self awareness they can either find acceptance of life situations or make the necessary changes to liberate themselves from beliefs and behaviour patterns that no longer work.
In order to accelerate the changes my clients want to make, I offer homeopathic remedies if clients wish, but absolutely respect that not everyone may want them. Homeopathy is a perfectly safe and natural healing system which gently stimulates the body and mind to correct imbalances and regain mental, emotional and physical health.
In my experience, homeopathic remedies, flower essences and talking therapy work very well alongside each other. Furthermore, as an experienced teacher, I find I have the necessary skills and resources that enable me to explain my observations and reflections to clients about the nature of their emotional pain and psychological disturbances.
Finally, my interest in mindfulness and spirituality has enabled me to use mediation and relaxation techniques in my work as a means to help my clients access a still and peaceful mind.
My way of working is therefore broad based and eclectic and I use various approaches to help clients find greater purpose and meaning in their lives.
Clinical Qualifications in Counselling
My initial training was in Person Centred Counselling at Haringey College in 1990 and later I completed a Diploma in Person Centred Counselling at the College of North West London. I am an Accredited Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
Additional Information
I have been involved in counselling for many years working as a bereavement counsellor for the London Borough of Barnet and as a student counsellor at a College of Further education where I was a lecturer in English as Foreign language. I undertook a professional training in Homeopathy in 1998 and have run a successful homeopathy practice in North London since then. I have always had an interest in psychology and healing and understanding the human psyche has been a lifetime's passion.
