Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy
I provide a structured, confidential and non judgemental counselling and psychotherapy service in the Thames Valley, near Henley, Reading and Newbury. I aim to effect a change from unhelpful or destructive patterns of your past. This usually leads to awareness and greater autonomy: you can make decisions to change your life, feel more confident and in control.
In my counselling and psychotherapy practice I have worked with clients aged from ten to over sixty years, in particular with issues around partners, marriage, child-parent relationships and difficulties in development of the self, as well as integration in a new culture. I have been in clinical practice for almost five years.
I have given my support to clients experiencing loss, e.g. death of a loved one; end of a relationship; divorce; move of house, employment or country. Stages of transition often result in periods of anxiety, even depression and grief.
I understand that to find one's way in a different culture and language can bring problems, sometimes accompanied by a crisis of identity for an individual. I have an international perspective, aware of language, creativity and difference, and can offer therapy in German as well as English.
My clients' well-being and healing is paramount and I foster mutuality, empathy, hope and respect in the therapeutic encounter which is contractually bound by the clear agreement between my clients and myself. Central to my counselling and psychotherapy work is the relationship between my clients and myself which we create together.
I facilitate small groups after rehabilitation, and I am interested in working with families.
As a Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) I am bound by its Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy. I am in regular, confidential consultation with a highly qualified supervisor.
What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy
I practice Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy. This is a method of humanistic therapy which addresses a person's thinking (cognitive), feeling (phenomenological experience and transferences) and behaviour. It can be applied in a brief, outcome focused setting. It is effective in both short term therapy and longer term explorative therapy. It is a highly effective method based on a contract for change formed between client and therapist for a well-defined outcome.
Transactional Analysis is a humanistic method. In therapy the emphasis is on the relationship of mutuality between the individuals.
The therapy can be graphically outlined, so that the client can follow the progress of their process. Empathy, respect and clarity are important in my communication with my clients.

Additional Information
My first professional degrees and training were a BA (Hons) in Philosophy and German, and a PGCE. I have been working as a teacher of German literature.
I am the mother of two daughters.
In my work as a therapist, my particular interest is in the areas of the self in relationship; of aculturisation; of family constellations and group dynamics.
