Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy

I am a qualified existential psychotherapist with a private counselling and psychotherapy practice in Central London. I have also worked as a psychotherapist in the voluntary sector and I am experienced at working with a wide range of life's challenges. I have considerable experience in drugs and alcohol dependency and have worked in diverse and challenging settings, including the National Health Service (NHS), homelessness and residential rehabilitation centres since 1997.

What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy

"If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading." Lao Tzu

Being human is complicated. It can be messy and overwhelming at times. You may feel anxious and uncertain with life’s challenges; whether this is nothing specific or a particular crisis. This may lead to a desire for clarity or better understanding of your current situation; for an opportunity to explore how your values determine and inspire your choices and decisions, or to gain support to cope with life’s challenges.

People engage in psychotherapy for different reasons – each defines what is important to achieve a sense of wellbeing and nothing is excluded for consideration.

Seeing a psychotherapist, within a confidential, non judgemental space and time, may enable you to explore your experiences – in response to distress, conflict, dissatisfaction, grief, confusion, difficulty or dependencies, and, or reflect, refine and revive choices for change and creativity - to renew your passion and inspiration for life or to search for meaning in life.

Psychotherapy is collaborative exploration by two people – the client and the psychotherapist – about the client.

Psychotherapy is also commonly referred to as counselling. These terms are interchangeable and are both ‘talking treatments’ – whereby the treatment is primarily based on talking to another person. The distinction usually refers to the length and rigour of training.

Existential psychotherapy is derived from existential philosophy and focuses on the lived experience. An existential approach seeks to uncover your own responses and meaning to life’s challenges - of your past experiences, your present situation and the possibilities for your future - rather than a pre-determined interpretation.

The existential approach emphasises personal choice and responsibility. Fundamentally, you can create your choices about how you want to live your life, who you are or who you want to become and what is needed for you to secure a sense of wellbeing and, or meaning for your life.

From my perspective, the existential approach is an optimistic approach that simultaneously embraces the possibilities and limitations of being human.

"It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live". Marcus Aurelius
