Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy
I am a UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) Registered Systemic Psychotherapist. I offer counselling and psychotherapy to individuals, couples and families living in the vicinity of High Peak and Dales areas of Derbyshire.
I am an experienced family and child care professional with over twenty years experience in this sector having worked for both the Local Authority and for the last ten years in the NHS for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, as Family Therapy Lead and Systemic Psychotherapist for North Derbyshire.
I have a wide variety of experience in working with emotional, behavioural and mental health issues that present with both adults, young people and children, also including issues of abuse for both adults and children.
What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy
Systemic Psychotherapy is more commonly called 'Family Therapy'. This is an approach which looks at the relationships around the problem, to help understand more fully how the problem has become stuck in the person's life. The therapy can be done either individually, in couples or as a group. However, it is usually but not always most effective when those people who are affected by the problem, can come together as a group to talk. The idea of coming together as a family, couple or relationship group can be worrying, and initially people often have concerns that this will make matters worse. However, being able to find helpful ways of talking and listening to each other, can often be the best way of moving relationships forward and resolving problems. This approach is also effective in working with professional groups within the workplace, who are experiencing relational difficulties.
Clinical Qualifications in Counselling and Psychotherapy
Having initially undertaken my core training as a Social Worker, I have subsequently undertaken a further four year Family Therapy and Systemic Psychotherapy training at BSc (Hons) and MSc degree level. This clinical training involved an initial two year academic programme to BSc (Hons) level, followed by a further two years of supervised clinical practice and academic study to complete the Master of Science Degree (MSc) in Systemic Family Therapy undertaken at Leeds University. It is a prerequisite of the training that it is undertaken alongside a core therapeutic profession, which in my case was working for Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Trust, as a clinician in the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS).
